What must the Rangers do to make the playoffs?

Currently, the Rangers are 5- 14 in September and are a half game out of a wild card spot after splitting the recent series against the Tampa Bay Rays.  Now, in order to make it the playoffs, the Rangers must start winning series against the Kansas City Royals.  If they do win against the Royals, it will mark their first series since Aug 28, when they swept the Seattle Mariners.  Also, a major statistic to note, the last time the Rangers managed to win consecutive games on was Aug 26-28 during the sweep of the Mariners.  The Rangers will close the regular season with a series against the Houston Astros and the Los Angeles Angels.

The Astros have lost their last 7 in their recent struggles.  Also, the Astros have lost their last 7 of 8 series.  The Rangers managed to sweep the Astros during their last meeting.  The Rangers have a 14-2 record this season against the Astros.

The Angels after struggling most of the season and remaining under .500 have started winning series in the month of September.  They have a September record of 14-6 and have won 5 of their last 6 series.  Also, the Angels took the last series against the Rangers.

The Texas Rangers must at least win at least 6 of their remaining 8 games if they are to make it to the 2013 Wild Card Play-in game.  That would mean they must win their next three series starting with a series win against the Royals.   If they manage to finish 7-2 over their last 9, they will finish September with a record of 11-16.  That record will be their worst September record in 10 years, but will it will help them reach their 4 straight playoff appearance.

Notes

Rangers finish up the Royals series with Alexi Ogando (7-4, 3.15 ERA).  Ogando managed to hold the Tampa Bay Rays to only 1 run over 5 innings.  Ogando has a 3.86 ERA against the Royals and a record of 1-0

Derek Holland will start the final home stand against the Houston Astros.  Derek recently had a solid outing against the Rays only allowing 2 hits and 2 runs over 6 innings.
