According to Baseball Prospectus, the Kansas City Royals playoff chance sits at two-percent, making it not very likely. It has been higher over the course of the season, but it has also been lower. It has been a very up and down season to say the least.
One thing is for sure though — not many teams have played better than the Royals post-All-Star Break. They have dominated and are particularly hot as of late. After winning 4 out of their last 5 series (all of which were against playoff contenders), they look poised to make a postseason run. But they have to get there first.
With only six games left, that is a heavy order and they are going to need a lot of help. As good as they have been during the past couple weeks, they have had a couple of games escape from them and haven’t been able to put together a solid winning streak. Now they need the Indians to lose 3 out of 6 games to close out the regular season, along with needing the Texas Rangers to win no more than four games. I also might as well add that they have to win-out the rest of the regular season.
So as one can see, with the Rangers playing the dreadful Houston Astros, and the Cleveland Indians playing the “barely better than Astros” and then the Chicago White Sox, the Royals need to pray for a miracle. With the way Kansas City has been playing, I wouldn’t say sweeping the Seattle Mariners and White Sox for a six game winning streak would be entirely improbable, but it would definitely require some clutch September baseball to give themselves a chance. There is still a buzz in late-September circling around these Royals for the first time in quite a long time in Kansas City. Everyone knows they have the potential to make a playoff run, they just need to get there first.
