ALDS: Tigers vs. Athletics Game 1 Preview
Tonight, the Tigers’ Max Scherzer and Athletics’ Bartolo Colon will pitch in front of 48,000 passionate A’s fans in game one of the ALDS. It’s a rematch from last season’s ALDS, where the Tigers won the series in 5 games. Now the question is, will the A’s find revenge from last season’s heart break, when they were called the Cinderella of baseball? This year’s team, where the Tigers and other major league teams have noticed that, this team is defiantly different than last season and could go deep into the playoffs.
The Tigers last season went with Justin Verlander in game 1 and 5 of the series last season, but this time around, 21-game winner and possible Cy Award winner Max Scherzer gets the assignment. Tigers’ Manager Jim Leyland has true faith in his star pitcher to go game 1, and having his power man Verlander go game 2. Verlander hasn’t had a great year with a 13 and 12 record, but the A’s aren’t worried about him. The A’s and Tigers last played in Detroit, when Scherzer, game 3 starter Anibal Sanchez, and Verlander didn’t record a win against the green and gold.
The lineups will be announced by both teams in the afternoon. Expect the A’s power bat of Yoenis Cespedes to be in the lineup tonight, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. Cespedes has been dealing with a right shoulder injury.
“There is a good chance you will see him in left field tomorrow, but we will have to wait and see when he gets here tomorrow,” said the A’s manager Bob Melvin to the media.
A big key to tonight is the A’s Cuban power bat, and also the bat of third baseman and AL MVP candidate Josh Donaldson. The A’s are trusting their 18 game-winner, 40-year old Bartolo Colon on the mound. Colon is proving that age is just a number. This will be the 40-year old, fastball pitcher’s biggest start of his career.
Tigers roster isn’t too surprising from the regular season accept for Jhonny Peralta, who’s coming back from suspension for the use of performance-enhancing drugs. Jim Leyland, though, has already said to the media that José Iglesias will get the start at shortstop. The Tigers big keys to win tonight is, can Scherzer have a decent pitch count, and go more than 6 innings? Also, will Peralta’s return to the team be a distraction?
