Tigers trade Prince Fielder to Rangers for Ian Kinsler

The Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers have agreed to a trade that will send 5-time All-Star first baseman Prince Fielder to Texas for 3-time All-Star second baseman Ian Kinsler, CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman confirms. No other players are involved.

It is expected that some financial agreements may be agreed upon, mostly centered around Fielder’s $214 million dollar contract.

Fielder’s limited no-trade clause includes Texas, but it is believed he will lift to allow the deal to go through. He still has seven years remaining on his contract. Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports say MLB commissioner Bud Selig is the only person who has to OK the deal.

Physicals have not yet been completed, but are expected to be by Thursday evening.

Trading Kinsler opens second base for top prospect Jurickson Profar. The Rangers have long been exploring trade opportunities involving Kinsler, Profar, and shortstop Elvis Andrus.

The deal frees up space for Detroit to afford Max Scherzer, who has been the subject of recent trade rumors.

CSN Bay Area’s Andrew Baggerly (on Twitter) suggests the Tigers, who now may move Miguel Cabrera back to first base, may have interest in acquiring San Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval.
